What is Personal Liability Coverage?
If you are held liable for the losses or injuries of others, personal liability coverage, also known as personal liability insurance, will shield you financially. Family members living with you may also be insured if your child inadvertently damages your neighbor's property. In addition to renters' and condo insurance plans, personal liability coverage is a regular feature of homeowners insurance policies.
What does Personal Liability Coverage Cover?
Injuries on your property: If you are found legally liable, your personal liability insurance may assist in covering the costs of another person's injuries sustained on your property, up to the policy's maximum limits.
Damage to others property: applies if the damage was caused by you or family members living with you. Let's say your kid smacks a baseball through the pricey stained-glass window of your neighbor.
Lawsuits and lawyer/court fees: Your personal liability insurance may assist with covering the cost of a lawyer, court costs, and any settlements if you are sued for an accident.
Dog bites (varies by insurer): Find out if dog bites are covered by your insurance by calling them. Dog bites are often not covered by insurance, and some may only cover specific breeds.
What isn't Covered by Personal Liability Coverage?
Car accidents: Your personal liability policy does not protect you for injuries or damages you cause while driving; only your auto liability insurance does.
Intentional harm or damage: Damages or injuries that you or a household member intentionally cause to another person are not covered.
Your own injuries or damages: Accidental injuries or property damage you cause to yourself or your family are not covered by personal liability insurance. Alternatively, you might be covered by your property or health insurance.
Business claims: Personal liability coverage does not extend to claims pertaining to your business or line of work.
